Granite Chippings
What are granite chippings?
Granite chippings are crushed rock material derived from large granite cliffs. These are typically sourced from Norway and Sweden, where some of the world's oldest and most unique stone structures can be found. The beautiful structure and age of the granite make Scandinavia home to some of the hardest types of granite known worldwide. Numerous beautiful products are made from granite, including gravestones and countertops, while many use granite curbs, tiles, and cobblestones in driveways and gardens.
The chippings are the crushed material from these cliffs, which are crushed and sorted by size (we will discuss the various sizes later). These stones and sorts are used for various purposes. The concrete industry uses chippings to create the strongest quality of concrete, known as quality E (Extra Aggressive Concrete), primarily because they are free of lime and are angular. Additionally, they are used in the asphalt industry for asphalt production. The stones are also used to decorate driveways, gardens, and pathways, as they are a fantastic stone material available in various sizes and colors. Furthermore, chippings are easy to spread and work with, lying beautifully and firmly where they are laid.
Where do granite chippings come from?
Granite chippings typically come from our neighboring countries, Sweden and Norway. These countries have vast amounts of granite material. Granite can also be found on Bornholm. The types of granite found on Bornholm have historically been used for producing cobblestones and cobblestones. If you look back more than 100 years, there were several hundred granite quarries on Bornholm. At that time, many households in the northwestern part of Bornholm had a small piece of land from which they could extract granite cobblestones and cobblestones. A household might produce around 500 stones in a year, as creating these square granite stones was a massive manual labor effort. Merchants from Copenhagen would come to Bornholm once a year to buy the stones produced by each household so that the stones could be laid in the streets of Copenhagen. That’s why we know the old, used, and worn cobblestones today, which originally came from Bornholm and southern Sweden.
Today, however, production on Bornholm is minimal, but here at Maxibag, we offer a large selection of other stones from Bornholm and other regions of Denmark.
What sizes are available for granite chippings?
There are several standard sizes of granite chippings. Here are the normal sizes produced:
- 0-2 / 0-4 mm - also known as stone dust.
- 5-8 mm - a smaller size often used in garden beds and cemeteries.
- 8-11 mm - a size used in garden beds and on pathways.
- 11-16 mm - the most common size used for driveways, as it doesn’t easily embed in car tires. It is also used in garden beds and on pathways, etc.
- 16-22 mm - a slightly larger size that can be used in driveways, along house walls/bases, and in garden beds. The advantage of this larger chipping is that it is heavier and lies very firmly.
- 32-45 / 32-50 mm - also known as DSB chippings or track chippings, these are the largest granite chippings, perfect for garden beds, along bases, and on slopes. They lie extremely firmly and do not roll down slopes.

What colors are available for granite chippings?
Granite is a unique material, and the color of the granite varies from rock to rock and from area to area. In some regions, there are very dark stones, while others are gray, and for example, red stones. Granite is a natural material that is deeply fascinating, and each rock has its own expression. Some rocks are completely monochrome, while others have different colors of veins running through them. For instance, a black rock might have white veins, while a gray granite rock may have red veins, resulting in granite chippings that can vary slightly in color composition. Some chippings can even sparkle like crystals when the sun shines on them, creating a beautiful look.
At Maxibag, we have traveled all over Scandinavia to find the most beautiful granite chippings. We have discovered some unique colors and qualities that we are proud to offer our customers.
grey granite chippings
These chippings are beautiful gray stones available in a wide range of sizes. The chippings are of Swedish quality, carefully selected and very attractive. This granite mix is primarily a beautiful combination of gray stones with a small proportion of white and/or reddish stones, creating a beautiful expression and a lovely mix of gray granite chippings. A very harmonious stone with small crystal-like sparks, making it truly exceptional.
White granite chippings
These chippings are of a high-quality pure white. They are completely white and look uniformly beautiful on all stones, providing an incredibly attractive surface. Such stones are often used in Japanese gardens but are increasingly being adopted in driveways and other landscaping where an exclusive look is desired. White granite chippings are available in sizes 8-11 mm and 11-16 mm. The stones are of Norwegian origin.
Dark grey granite chippings
This stone type is of a very beautiful dark gray quality, highly uniform in color. All stones are dark gray and have a beautiful anthracite color. These stones are a very popular type, providing a slightly darker exclusive look. Dark gray granite chippings are available in sizes 11-16 mm and 16-22 mm and come from Norway. We are very pleased to offer a proper dark gray quality, as it is challenging to find a suitable dark and uniform quality on the market.
Red and red/black granite chippings
The red quality comes from one of Northern Europe's smallest granite quarries. The color of the stones speaks for itself; they are beautiful red with small black specks in the stones. It appears beautifully red, in a fine uniform quality. It is difficult to source a proper red quality, but we have been fortunate to collaborate with a small Norwegian family business that owns this exclusive granite quarry. These stones are available in the size 12-22 mm.
The red/black mix is an incredibly beautiful and harmonious stone composition. It is a blend of reddish and black stones, providing a very calm and balanced look in gardens and driveways, and many customers who visit our site are very impressed by this type. These stones are available in the size 11-16 mm.
Both of the above two mixes of reddish granite chippings are incredibly beautiful and will make a striking impression in your driveway that won’t easily be seen at your neighbor's.
Black granite chippings
Our black granite chippings are of a proper and beautiful quality. We have two qualities of black stones. The standard black is of a beautiful black quality, where a few red or white stones may occur among them. This stone type is well-known and provides a beautiful look, whether used in gardens, beds, on slopes, or in driveways. Additionally, we have been fortunate to add an extra black quality to our assortment. This stone type comes from a family-owned quarry in Sweden, which is a smaller quarry that only produces for a few months a year, and in smaller quantities. It is challenging to source this product, but we are lucky to be the exclusive dealer. It is the blackest granite chippings that can be sourced in all of Europe and is of a thoroughly uniform quality. It is extremely exclusive, and we offer it as described only in limited quantities.
If you are unsure about the colors of the chippings or the color you may already have, feel free to contact our experts for good advice.
Where can you lay granite chippings?
Granite chippings can generally be laid anywhere you desire. We recommend thoroughly clearing the area of stones and weeds before laying them. It is advisable to lay a layer of 3 cm of stone dust or a weed barrier before laying the chippings. This will help prevent weeds, and other stones or soil from below cannot penetrate the stones you lay. Here are some recommendations for places you can lay the chippings.
Laying granite chippings on slopes
We recommend using our largest stones, known as black chippings in 32-45 mm or gray chippings in 32-50 mm. We recommend this size because it is a relatively large granite stone that lies very firmly and will not roll down during heavy rains. These stones can be laid on steep areas without any issues.
Laying in gardens and flower beds
In flower beds, you can lay all types of granite chippings. It’s just a matter of the expression you want and the functionality you desire. The small 5-8 mm chippings are easy to rake, while the larger stones are heavier and sit more firmly in the bed. All stones are beautiful, so consider the expression you want.
Laying in driveways
In driveways, it is essential to choose a size that is not too small, as the chippings can embed in car tires, and not too large, as they can be too coarse to drive on. Therefore, we recommend either the size 11-16 mm (the most commonly used granite chippings in driveways) or 16-22 mm, which are also highly usable. The color of the chippings does not matter; choose the color that best suits the expression you desire.
Granite chippings for decorative purposes
You can also lay the chippings on walkways, paths, or terraces as decorative purposes. This is also an excellent idea for creating a beautiful garden path or terrace that complements your garden’s other elements. Many choose to lay chippings alongside stones or tiles, which provides a lovely look.
If you need help with laying your granite chippings or are uncertain about the sizes, colors, or types, please feel free to contact our team. We would love to guide you through the choices and help ensure you choose the best products for your project.
Terrace with Granite Chippings
It is possible to lay a terrace with chippings, which is both beautiful and decorative. An advantage of laying the chippings and then compacting them with a plate compactor is that the surface becomes extra hard and firm. For size, we recommend sizes 5-8 mm or 8-11 mm.
Grave Site with Granite Chipping
Grave sites are often adorned with beautiful chips. The smallest stone sizes, such as 5-8 mm and 8-11 mm, are used here. The most commonly used stone size for a grave site is 5-8 mm.
Granite Chippings - How thick a layer?
The thickness of the layer of chips you should lay depends significantly on the size of the stones you choose. The larger the stone, the thicker the layer you will need to cover. Here, we outline an approximate thickness for the individual chip sizes:
- 5-8 mm is recommended in a layer thickness of 3-4 cm.
- 8-11 mm is recommended in a layer thickness of 4-5 cm.
- 11-16 mm is recommended in a layer thickness of 5 cm.
- 16-22 mm is recommended in a layer thickness of 7 cm.
- 32-45 / 32-50 mm is recommended in a layer thickness of 10 cm.
So, find the size of granite chips you want, and then use our recommendation for the layer thickness of the chips.
Granite Chippings - How Much Per m²?
In relation to how thick a layer you should lay, the layer thickness determines how many m² you can cover per ton or m³ (1000 liters). Here, we outline how many m² you can cover with the different stone sizes:
- 5-8 mm can cover approximately 25-30 m² per Maxibag with 1 m³ (1 m³ = 1500 – 1700 kg depending on color choice).
- 8-11 mm can cover approximately 25 m² per Maxibag with 1 m³ (1 m³ = 1500 – 1700 kg depending on color choice).
- 11-16 mm can cover approximately 20 m² per Maxibag with 1 m³ (1 m³ = 1500 – 1700 kg depending on color choice).
- 16-22 mm can cover approximately 12-13 m² per Maxibag with 1 m³ (1 m³ = 1500 – 1700 kg depending on color choice).
- 32-45 mm / 32-50 mm can cover approximately 10 m² per Maxibag with 1 m³ (1 m³ = 1500 – 1700 kg depending on color choice).
By following this recommendation, you will achieve the best result without the layer becoming too thick.
Granite Chips Base?
You can build your base before laying the chips in three different ways that we recommend.
The best and most thorough way to create a base under the chips is to first lay a weed barrier that covers the entire area. Then lay 2-3 cm of stone dust, which should be compacted with a plate compactor or garden roller after laying. Finally, lay the granite chips, which should also be compacted with a plate compactor / garden roller after laying. This will give you a top-quality surface that resists weeds from underneath.
- Lay 2-3 cm of stone dust and vibrate it with a plate compactor or garden roller. Then lay the granite chips in the recommended layer and compact with a plate compactor / garden roller.
- Lay a weed barrier that covers the entire area. Then lay the chips in the recommended layer and compact with a plate compactor / garden roller.
