Extra black granite chippings – 11–16 mm

Here you will find some of the finest black granite chippings on the market in the 11–16 mm size. They are decorative stones full of character that are particularly well suited to garden beds, courtyards, paths and driveways. The 11–16 mm size is one of the most popular and is the classic granite chipping most often seen in Danish driveways.

Our black granite chippings are carefully graded, so the size is very uniform. This is very important for the finished result, as even grading gives a neater and more professional look to the surface. We stock this size in two different colour variants, which we describe in more detail further down.

Please note: The size of the chippings is always stated by the narrowest dimension.

Colours and qualities

We offer black granite chippings 11–16 mm in two different qualities:

Standard black

This quality has an attractive black colour, which appears darkest when wet and more muted when dry. The product images were taken while the stones were wet. As the granite is quarried from natural rock formations, a few lighter stones may occur in this variant. It is a very popular quality with an attractive, natural look. Go to the product Black Granite Chippings 11-16 mm standard black

Extra black

The extra black variant is the darkest granite chipping you can find on the market. The colour is deep, uniform and black throughout. The chippings come from a small granite quarry with limited production a few months a year. We have the Danish sales rights for this quality and are proud to be able to offer a very special granite chipping with an exclusive appearance.

Recommended layer thickness – 11–16 mm

When laying black granite chippings in the 11–16 mm size, we recommend a layer thickness of approx. 5 cm. This is the ideal amount, where the surface is neither too thin nor too thick.

This particular size is especially well suited to driveways. If the layer is too thin, the base will quickly show through, giving an uneven and unfinished look. Conversely, too thick a layer can lead to wheel ruts. That is why 5 cm – maximum 6 cm – is the optimal solution.

Where can 11–16 mm granite chippings be used?

Black granite chippings in 11–16 mm are the most widely used chipping size on the market. They are used in gardens, parks, at commercial properties and especially in driveways. It is without doubt the most common size for driveways in Jutland, Funen and Zealand.

It is a versatile chipping that can be used almost anywhere. A big advantage of granite chippings – compared with many ordinary natural stones – is their angular shape. This means they can lock together, so the surface becomes stable and does not tend to roll.

How to minimise weeds in granite chippings

Black granite chippings 11–16 mm are very well suited to suppressing weeds, provided the build-up is done correctly from the start. Broadly speaking, there are two effective methods:

Granite chippings and weed membrane

With this solution, a weed membrane is laid first, preferably in black so it blends discreetly into the surface. Make sure the membrane overlaps correctly and covers the entire area. The granite chippings are then spread in an even layer. Ideally, finish by compacting or rolling the surface so the chippings settle and lock together.

Weed membrane, black stone dust and granite chippings

If you want the most durable and long-term solution, this build-up is recommended. First, the weed membrane is laid. Then approx. 3 cm of black stone dust is spread and compacted with a plate compactor or roller, so the base becomes stable and level. Finally, 4–5 cm of granite chippings are laid. Lightly compacting the top layer ensures that the chippings lie firm and even. It is possible to skip compacting, but the result is best with it.

Weight and stability

Granite is a heavy natural material, and black granite is among the heaviest. Black granite chippings in 11–16 mm weigh approx. 1,700 kg per m³, which contributes to a very stable surface.

What are granite chippings?

Granite chippings are crushed and graded pieces of granite, typically from granite quarries abroad. Granite is only found to a limited extent in Denmark, so most of it is imported. The granite is blasted and graded into different fractions, making it possible to offer several sizes and qualities – like the ones you will find at Maxibag.

Delivery of granite chippings

As granite is a heavy material, correct placement on delivery is crucial. At Maxibag we have extensive experience in delivering maxibags and offer flexible solutions, so the material is placed as close as possible to where it will be used. You can also choose both the delivery method and delivery time, depending on what suits your project best.

Standard delivery – pavement / driveway

Choose this free delivery method if the maxibag can be placed at the kerb, on the pavement or just inside the driveway. We recommend that you describe exactly where you would like the goods placed in your order, so the driver can easily follow the instructions.

Delivery by mobile forklift

With this solution, the driver brings a self-propelled forklift with pneumatic tyres. The forklift can drive on firm surfaces such as gravel, stone, shingle, asphalt and dry grass, and is often used for deliveries to allotments or places with limited space. The goods can be driven directly from the lorry to the desired location.

Our forklifts require a width of 2.5 m.

Delivery by crane

If you need your maxibag lifted over a hedge, a fence or similar, crane delivery is the right solution. The lorry is equipped with a crane, so the goods can be placed exactly where you want them.

Please note that crane lorries require good access: a minimum of approx. 4.5 metres of clearance height and 4 metres of width all the way to the delivery point. The crane can typically reach 6-8 metres from the lorry.

Hvordan undgår man ukrudt i granitskærver?
