Extra black granite chippings – 16–22 mm

Welcome to our black granite chippings in the 16–22 mm size. Here you get a really attractive type of chipping with a uniform look and a size that stays stable once it has been laid. 16–22 mm indicates the stone's measurement at the narrowest dimension – so the chippings can easily be considerably longer at the longest dimension (often up to approx. 40–45 mm). This makes it a slightly coarser fraction, which is becoming more and more popular in Denmark because many people prefer a larger stone that stays firmly in place.

If, for example, you have a flower bed where you clear leaves with a leaf blower, this size is a really good choice because the chippings do not blow away so easily. Black granite chippings 16–22 mm have a number of advantages, which you can read more about below.

Please note: Chipping sizes are always stated by the narrowest dimension.

Origin – where do granite chippings come from?

These granite chippings come from Norway and Sweden – depending on whether you choose standard black or the extra black quality. What they have in common is that they are made from crushed granite from granite quarries. Large pieces of rock are blasted out and then crushed by machines into smaller pieces. Finally, the material is graded into fractions (sizes), for example from stone dust 0–2 mm, 2–5 mm, etc., including 16–22 mm.

Colours and variants

At Maxibag we offer two versions of black granite chippings in 16–22 mm:

Standard black

This variant is our popular “classic” black quality. When the stone is wet, it looks very dark and black, while in a dry state it becomes more muted and can appear more greyish. A few light/white stones may occur, as the granite can naturally contain small light veins in the rock. This gives an attractive and natural look that many customers particularly appreciate. Go to our standard black variant.

Extra black

If you want the deepest and most uniform black look, the extra black variant is the obvious choice. It is the darkest granite chipping on the market and is extracted from a small, special granite quarry with limited production for a short period each year. We are pleased to be able to offer this quality in Denmark. The chippings are jet black and very uniform in colour.

Recommended layer thickness – Granite chippings 16–22 mm

With a coarser chipping size such as 16–22 mm, we recommend a thicker layer than for smaller fractions. To get a neat surface with good coverage, you should lay approx. 7 cm. The larger the chippings, the thicker the layer needs to be before the area looks properly covered – and with 7 cm you get a really attractive result.

Where can a larger chipping be used?

More and more people choose 16–22 mm for their driveway. The advantage of this size is that the chippings do not get stuck in car tyres so easily, which reduces the risk of them being carried out of the surface.

In addition, 16–22 mm is often used in flower beds, along house walls and on slopes (as long as the gradient is not too steep), where you want a stable stone that stays in place.

Granite chippings and weeds

If you want an area with minimal weeds, 16–22 mm is also a strong choice – especially if the build-up is done correctly from the start. The most effective solution is:

  1. Weed membrane covering the entire area

  2. Approx. 3 cm black stone dust, compacted with a plate compactor

  3. Approx. 6–7 cm black granite chippings on top (ideally lightly compacted at the end)

This gives a very solid and weed-suppressing build-up with an attractive, finished look.

A simpler solution is also possible: weed membrane at the bottom and granite chippings directly on top. This works well, but the most durable solution is the method with stone dust.

Delivery of extra black granite chippings

When you have maxibags/bulk bags of heavy materials such as chippings delivered, the placement makes a big difference to how easy the work is afterwards. At Maxibag we have extensive experience with deliveries and can offer several delivery methods, so you can choose the solution that best suits your address and your project.

Standard delivery – “pavement / driveway”

The driver places the goods at the kerb, on the pavement or at the start of the driveway. This delivery is included in the price.

Delivery by special forklift (mobile forklift)

Here the driver brings a mobile forklift that can drive the goods closer to where you need them – e.g. down gravel roads, into allotments, on gravel, chippings or further into the driveway. Simply state in your order where you would like the maxibag placed. You do not need to be at home if the instructions are clear.

A forklift requires a width of 2.5 metres

Delivery by crane

If you need the maxibag lifted over a hedge, fence, railings or similar, you should choose crane delivery.

Please note that crane lorries require good access: there must be approx. 4.5 m of clearance height and approx. 4 m of clear width all the way. The crane can typically reach 6–8 metres from the lorry.

Hvordan undgår man ukrudt i granitskærver?
