Extra black granite chippings – 8–11 mm
The extra black granite chippings in the 8–11 mm size are among the smallest chippings normally used. It is a fine and elegant stone that many choose for flower beds, courtyards and decorative areas. The size makes it easy to handle and easy to spread evenly. Another big advantage is that the surface can easily be raked neat again, so it always looks uniform and well kept.
We offer some of the finest black granite chippings on the market in 8–11 mm, which are very carefully graded. The result is a stone with high uniformity and an exclusive look. This particular size is often used in Japanese-inspired gardens, where 8–11 mm is the most common fraction.
Please note: Stone sizes are always stated by the smallest dimension.
Colour shades of granite chippings
Our black granite chippings in 8–11 mm are available in two qualities:
Standard black
The ordinary black granite chippings are a popular and attractive stone sold in large quantities. When wet, the stone appears deep black, while the colour becomes more muted when dry. The product images show the chippings wet. As the granite is quarried from rock with natural light veins, a few lighter stones may occur in this variant.
Extra black
The extra black version is among the darkest granite chippings you can find. The colour is very deep and uniform. The chippings are extracted by a small, family-owned producer in Norway, which only quarries granite in limited quantities and for a few months a year. Through our Swedish partner, Maxibag has been given the opportunity to be the Danish sales channel for this particular quality. We are proud of that, and here you get a very special granite chipping with an exclusive black look.
Please be aware that all stones are delivered with dust from production. Only after a few months of rain and natural wear will the final colour clearly emerge.
Weight and stability
Black granite chippings are a very heavy material and are considered the heaviest type of chippings on the market. The weight is approx. 1,700 kg per m³. The high weight means that the chippings lie stable and firm once they have been laid.
What are granite chippings?
Granite chippings consist of crushed and graded pieces of rock, mainly from Norway and Sweden. In Denmark, granite is mainly found on Bornholm, where the material is used especially for cobblestones, setts and gravestones. Production of granite chippings on Bornholm is very limited today. Our black granite chippings therefore come from Norway, while the extra black variant comes from Sweden. Large pieces of rock are blasted and graded into different fractions – including the popular 8–11 mm size.
Recommended layer thickness
When laying black granite chippings in 8–11 mm, we recommend a total layer of approx. 5 cm. This thickness gives the best coverage and a uniform result. It is possible to make do with approx. 3 cm, but this often gives an uneven and unfinished look. A 5 cm layer is the most durable and attractive solution.
Areas of use
Granite chippings in 8–11 mm are very versatile and among the most widely used sizes. They are perfect for flower beds, courtyards, terraces and decorative areas. The only use we do not recommend is in driveways. Here the stones can get stuck in car tyres and be carried away from the area.
Granite chippings and weeds
A surface built up with black granite chippings can be highly weed-suppressing.
The most effective build-up is:
Weed membrane
Approx. 3 cm black stone dust
4–5 cm granite chippings
After laying the stone dust, we recommend compacting the layer with a plate compactor so the base becomes firm and even. The granite chippings are then spread and can finally also be lightly compacted to ensure a stable result. This solution keeps weeds down for a very long time.
Delivery of extra black granite chippings 8–11 mm
Granite chippings are heavy, and correct placement on delivery makes the work considerably easier. At Maxibag we offer several delivery methods, so you can choose the solution that best suits your project. We also offer fast delivery – including an express option.
Delivery to pavement or driveway
Choose this option if the material can be placed by the road, on the pavement or at the start of the driveway. Simply state the desired placement in your order and the driver will take care of the rest. You do not need to be at home for the delivery.
Mobile forklift
One of our most popular delivery methods. The driver brings a self-propelled forklift that can drive on gravel, shingle, pebbles and dry grass. It is also suitable for gravel roads and allotments. The forklift is approx. 2.5 metres wide and very manoeuvrable – even in confined spaces.
Crane delivery
With crane delivery, the lorry arrives with a mounted crane, which is ideal if bulk bags need to be lifted over hedges, fences or other obstacles.
Please note that crane lorries need plenty of space: a clearance height of approx. 4.5 metres and a clear width of approx. 4 metres all the way to the delivery point. The crane can reach bulk bags approx. 6–8 metres from the lorry.
