Everything you need to know about growth clay and our ready-mixed soils
When you grow in pots or raised beds, or create new beds in the garden, the structure of the soil is the key to healthy plants. Pure topsoil can compact over time – especially during heavy rainfall or frequent watering. When the soil becomes too compact, oxygen disappears from the roots and water cannot drain away.
Adding growth clay (fired clay balls) creates permanent air pockets in the soil. Growth clay never breaks down, which means you get a lasting improvement in drainage capacity and soil structure year after year.
At Maxibag, we have made the job easy for you: you can buy both pure growth clay for your own projects and ready-mixed soil blends where the growth clay has already been mixed in and distributed completely evenly.
Pure growth clay in bulk bags
Pure growth clay consists of 100% fired, porous clay balls. It is an extremely lightweight natural material that is indispensable when building drainage layers or adding air to heavy soil types.
Available sizes: 500 litres, 1000 litres and 2000 litres.
Where should it be used?
Drainage layer: Placed in the bottom 3–5 cm of pots, balcony boxes, raised beds and self-watering planters to prevent the roots from standing in water and rotting.
Soil improvement: Mixed directly into compacted clay soil in the garden to permanently soften and aerate the soil.
Larger landscaping works: Ideal for building green roofs, drainage around foundations and gullies, and planting larger trees and shrubs.
Screened top soil with growth clay (optional soil conditioner)
Our ready-mixed top soil with growth clay is tailored for anyone who wants a light and airy soil mix ready to spread. The soil is screened (sieved free of roots and large stones) and mixed with 20% growth clay. As standard, 25% organic soil conditioner is mixed in for a natural nutrient boost, but the fertiliser can be omitted if you want a clean, unfertilised soil mix.
Available sizes: 340 litres, 670 litres, 1000 litres and 1300 litres.
Where should it be used?
340 litres: Perfect volume for filling pots, balcony boxes, smaller planters and greenhouses.
670 litres: Ideal for 1–2 standard raised beds or smaller perennial beds.
1000 litres (1 m³): Our bestseller for building larger raised bed installations, kitchen gardens and planting new hedges.
1300 litres: For those with a larger garden project where soil needs to be replaced over an entire area.
Screened topsoil with growth clay AND soil conditioner
For the really big landscaping and renovation projects, we offer our extra-large bulk bags. These mixes are always delivered as a complete nutrient and structure package consisting of 55% screened topsoil, 20% growth clay and 25% organic, composted soil conditioner. You get a powerful all-in-one solution that ensures permanent drainage, excellent oxygen supply and long-lasting nutrition for your plants.
Available sizes: 1500 litres, 1700 litres and 2000 litres
Where should it be used?
1500 litres & 1700 litres: Ideal for extensive creation of new garden beds, larger orchards, deep raised beds or replacing worn-out topsoil.
2000 litres: The most economical solution for landscape gardeners, businesses or private customers with large properties, where large quantities of quality soil need to be moved with maximum coverage.
